Improving Portland Economy

Advancing and improving the economy of Portland will necessitate an approach that addresses various aspects of business, infrastructure, workforce development, and community engagement. Here are some tangible solutions that I am  considering as a candidate for the City of Portland, District 2 Councilor:

  1. Support Small Businesses: Implement policies and programs that support small businesses, such as streamlined permitting processes, access to capital, and technical assistance programs. Encouraging entrepreneurship can stimulate local economic growth.

  2. Invest in Infrastructure: Improve transportation infrastructure, including roads, bridges, public transit, and bike lanes. Infrastructure investments not only create jobs but also make the city more attractive to businesses and residents.

  3. Promote Sustainability: Leverage Portland’s reputation as a leader in sustainability to attract green businesses and investments. Encourage the adoption of renewable energy, green building practices, and sustainable transportation options.

  4. Foster Innovation and Technology: Support innovation hubs, incubators, and accelerators to nurture startups and technology companies. Collaborate with universities, community colleges, and research institutions to commercialize cutting-edge research and technology.

  5. Diversify Industries: Reduce reliance on a few key industries by diversifying the economy. Encourage growth in sectors such as technology, healthcare, clean energy, creative industries, and advanced manufacturing.

  6. Workforce Development: Invest in education and workforce training programs to ensure residents have the skills needed for high-demand jobs. Collaborate with employers and unions to develop training programs tailored to industry needs.

  7. Promote Tourism: Capitalize on Portland’s natural beauty, cultural attractions, and culinary scene to attract tourists. Invest in marketing campaigns to promote Portland as a destination for leisure and business travelers.

  8. Revitalize Underserved Neighborhoods: Implement targeted economic development initiatives in underserved neighborhoods i.e. the Cully neighborhood to create jobs, improve infrastructure, and attract investment.

  9. Support Arts and Culture: Recognize the economic value of the arts, music, and cultural sector by providing funding, resources, and support for artists, cultural organizations, and events. A vibrant arts scene can attract visitors and stimulate economic activity.

  10. Collaborate with Stakeholders: Engage with businesses, community organizations, unions, government agencies, County, Metro, neighborhood association, and residents to develop and implement economic development strategies collaboratively. Building partnerships can enhance the effectiveness of economic initiatives and ensure broad-based support.

By implementing these tangible solutions and fostering a supportive environment for business and innovation, Portland can advance its economy and create opportunities for sustainable growth and prosperity.
