Pragmatic Progressive

My values, if forced into a label, can be called Progressive. Of late however, Progressives have been criticized for being more performative than outcomes driven. As such, I have focused my support for elected officials, on people who I would call “Pragmatic Progressives.”

Nabil is, IMHO, a Pragmatic Progressive.

I have “known” Nabil for almost 3 decades. He and I have lived on the same street in District 2 for almost 30 years. As I have learned more about Nabil and his candidacy, policies and policy implementation approach, I feel he is precisely the type of City Council member we need in Portland.

Nabil believes in advocating for underrepresented communities. However, he doesn’t just “saber-rattle.” He recognizes that Disrict 2 is one of the most racially and socio-economically diverse districts in Portland. As such, when he talks about issues such as the need for a focus on “public safety” he knows it means something entirely different in Cully than in Parkrose than in St. Johns than in Alameda/Irvington. As such, policies and programs cannot be “one-size fits all.”

This is critical with the new City Council structure we will have in place Jan 1, 2025. 12 City Council members set policy. A City Administrator (the COO of the City) deploys funds to support programs endorsed by the Council (and Mayor).

I feel Nabil will be able to combine his knowledge of the diversity of District 2, with his experience actually managing programs and budgets, with his progressive values. He knows that “getting things done” is not
about making grandiose statements, but actually knowing where and how money should be spent, and how outcomes should be measured.

I whole-heartedly endorse Nabil Zagloul for Portland City Council
District 2.

Judi Kloper

Retired Educator & Community Advocate

Over the last seven or eight years, I’ve gotten to know Nabil as a director of a social services program. He is, in my opinion, an excellent example of a public servant.I am very excited about his candidacy because Nabil is, from what I’ve read about the other 20 candidates, one of the most — or is the most — qualified of all of them running due to his knowledge of and experience helping in the areas of homelessness, substance use and abuse, domestic violence, immigrant and refugee needs, health issues, counseling, food insecurity, English language learning, and the list goes on; basically all the issues we are facing in this city and county he deals with every day, all day, and into the nigh. Nabil has stepped up to help these people deal with their struggles; I’ve witnessed his caring and concern and how it has helped the people I serve through my volunteering. I’m supporting and endorsing Nabil to become a member of the city council, district 2. I feel it’s my civic duty 🙂 to encourage those in his district 2 to vote for him. Nabil is a man of integrity and compassion, and he is and has been for years committed to helping those in our community as well as in making Portland a wonderful city to live and work in.

If he wins, the folks in his district will be well represented.

He has so many great and carefully researched ideas already, yet he is also eager to listen to others so he can learn even more. Nabil will be a wonderful member of Portland’s City Council.
